About Stephen C. Rhudy
With more than twenty-five years as a lawyer, and more than a dozen years practicing with Walker, Lambe, Rhudy & Costley, P.L.L.C., Steve Rhudy has helped hundreds of North Carolinians with estate planning and probate, estate and trust administration, and all manner of business matters. A partner with one of the largest and most vibrant estate planning practices in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina, Steve's principal practice endeavors are in estate planning, estate, gift and income tax planning, planning for charitable giving, estate and trust administration, business and intellectual property transactions, and providing counsel to charitable organizations. Steve's background as an educator and as a Phi Beta Kappa math major at SUNY Binghamton inevitably inform his approach to his work; his clients benefit from his analytical skills and attention to detail, his understanding of business and the law, and his strong teaching and communication skills. Steve believes that a key part of his role as legal advisor is to understand where his clients have come from, and where they are going, and to prepare them to make well-informed decisions. His commitment is to earn his clients' trust, and to help them define and achieve their goals in cost-effective fashion.
Experience
Steve Rhudy was born in Schenectady, New York, the son of an engineer, and weathered
many a long, cold winter upstate, before following his heart south. After law
school at Duke and admission to the North Carolina Bar in 1977, followed by
a short stint as a government attorney in Washington, D.C., Steve returned to
North Carolina and joined a small boutique law practice in Raleigh, concentrating
his practice in business transactions and tax planning. From 1988 to 1992, before
coming to Walker, Lambe, Rhudy & Costley, P.L.L.C., he enjoyed a change of pace full-time appointment
as a lecturer at N. C. State, teaching classes in Business, Agricultural and
Environmental
Law,
while continuing practice as "of counsel" to a Research Triangle Park
firm. In addition to his law practice, Steve’s community service has included
several years (including a year as chair) on the board of directors of a local
modern dance company, several years on the North Carolina Bicycle Committee,
including a year as chair, and several years as a charter member of the City
of Raleigh's Environmental Quality Advisory Board. His professional memberships
include the American Bar Association, North Carolina Bar Association, Durham
County Bar Association, and the Braxton Craven Inn of Court.
Education
Steve majored in Mathematics in Harpur College, at SUNY Binghamton (now Binghamton
University), and earned his B.A. degree with honors in 1973, having also been
named to Phi Beta Kappa. His undergraduate studies also took him to the University
of Graz, Austria in 1972. Offered a Womble Scholarship, he moved south to attend
Duke Law School and was graduated with high distinction in 1977, after also
earning an American Jurisprudence Award in Business Organizations.
Personal
Steve is married to Jane Nixon Rhudy, a physical therapist by training, but
currently at home with their two school-age daughters, Emerson and Kate. Beyond
family life and lawyering, Steve enjoys cooking, reading, hiking, and Blue Devil
basketball, as well as any time spent outdoors. He especially enjoys his daughters’
violin (and fiddling) concerts, and their other musical and athletic exploits.
When time permits, the family retreats to a cabin on his great-grandfather’s
farm in the Virginia Highlands.
